Epcot's African Bead Outpost
In all of the unique countries of World Showcase is an oasis of African culture . Known as the Outpost it combines African themed huts, buildings, and culture.
Located in the southeast corner of Epcot's World Showcase .There's a group of buildings that resemble an African village. As you enter the Outpost coming from China, you hear the sound of African drums with children of all ages ( and me ) banging away on them. Many a day I can hear my wife say " come on Mike let the little kids have a chance". As you enter the Outpost area the Refreshment Cool Post, a snack bar on your left. Village Traders an African themed gift shop, a face painting stand and last but not least the Bead outpost.
Now you and even me have walked by this section of World Showcase a thousand times. But out of the corner of your eye, you see a splash of color like you've never seen before. The Bead Outpost has colorful beads made out of recycled Disney park maps. What did you say? Jewelry made out of Disney Park maps, yeah right ! No seriously Disney sends paper and maps to Africa to be made into hand rolled beads. They are then assembled into necklaces, bracelets, anklets, earrings, and chokers. Prices range from $ 7.00 to $20.00 . You can string them yourself or buy them pre-assembled. This is a truly unique souvenir ,not just another Mickey back scratcher. Although I could use one ,it's getting harder to reach everything.
So next time you walk through the Outpost section of World Showcase ,stop and take a look at a real treasure for a foreign land, not made in China.
